About Me

Artist in Suffolk

Autonomy is the central thread to all of my work. Creating surrealist dystopian worlds through the use of mixed media and text is the current focus of my work. Using found objects to create chance marks and experimental results ensures the authenticity of my work. Through embracing chance and the vocabulary or text and marks, I create art that is always giving. I am influenced by the places and figures from my life and dreams. The figures and images in my work are often not of this world, they’re created when I put ink to paper and we just go from there.

Elgin's Life and Work

Elgin Thwaites (1996) was born in Saudi Arabia and lives and works in Suffolk UK. Through autonomy, Thwaites creates surrealist dystopian worlds using print and mixed media on paper. In 2013, Thwaites collaborated with students at the Nicolson institute in Stornoway to create a large sculpture for the new school building. Through her BA (Hons) in Fine Art at University of Suffolk, Ipswich (2018-2021) Thwaites showed works in the group exhibition “Mapping” at the University of Suffolk exhibition space. These were a collection of 9 paintings based on the psychogeography of a night out in Ipswich. Thwaites is currently involved in a project 'Take Thick with the Light' using letters sent from the front line in the First World War as inspiration for a collaborative stitched work. This will be exhibited throughout Suffolk from 2020-2022. Thwaites is also working on developing sculptural and paper based works for the future group exhibition in Arlington's, Ipswich (Dec 2019).
